Bizarrely, most of the journalists I have met in Korea are rellay interesting, smart people. But for some reason, when they get behind the keyboard, they turn into something else. Much as academics in Korea seem to think they have to be wise old gas bags, journalists seem to think they have to be crusading heroes. (Also, the editorial structure at the Korean newspapers I know seems to be designed to maximize the worst aspects of journalism). Anyhow, I find it so interesting that Korean media are so driven by populism, but the Korean people have so little trust in and regard for journalism. Coincidence?
