What is also important to remember is that it is not only international actors coming in to take as much as possible as cheaply as possible from certain countries, but it is often also particularly in the case of DRC the government of the country allowing that to happen, and profiting from this relationship themselves. I think we really must step away from the view of managing Africa externally to one where we see a place like DRC as the autonomous nation that it is, and respect this independence. However, respecting autonomy is about more than just filing paperwork and acknowleging bureacratic systems; it is also about understanding the nuanced ways in which power differentials undermine informed consent and freedom of choice. The burden is more on us external, developed countries precisely because we have more power market, political, economic, military. And so it is us who must refrain from its abuse, and search more profoundly the consequences of our actions.
